Click here to view this message online in your web browser. World Week For Animals In Laboratories Is Here! Take action this week! World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) is here! From April 16 through April 24, activists around the world rally their forces and speak out for the millions of animals tortured and killed each year in the name of science.  In 2010, with your help, we accomplished a great deal for animals in labs. Almost a year after we filed official complaints and thousands of IDA members submitted public comments, NASA dropped plans to expose squirrel monkeys to deep space radiation. Two $15 million expansion projects at the country's oldest and largest primate centers – Oregon and Washington, respectively – were shot down after we supplied key NIH officials with evidence of gross veterinary incompetence and USDA safety violations.
Fifty five long-tailed macaques abandoned in a toxicology lab were rescued and transported to new homes in primate sanctuaries. A coalition of organizations, including IDA, sued the FDA for failing to respond to our Mandatory Alternatives Petition.  Of course, we still have a long way to go. We need to demand that the National Institutes of Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research make a concrete commitment to reducing the number of animals in experiments each year. We must convince Connecticut legislators to support HB 5530, which will allow students with conscientious objections to choose not to dissect animals in class. We have to pressure our federal legislators to support the Great Ape Protection Act, landmark legislation banning great ape experimentation, which just last week was reintroduced in the House and the Senate as the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act!
Fax your legislators today and ask them to support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act (S. 810 / H.R. 1513) – which would spare all great apes from any invasive experimentation and would retire all apes in federal laboratories to sanctuaries. Please help us keep up the momentum by taking action for animals in labs this week. It is as easy as sending a letter or attending an event. There are currently events registered in 20 U.S. cities, plus Canada and France. Visit www.wwail.org for event listings and form letters. With every individual action, we move one step closer to that inevitable day in the near future when animal experimentation is abolished forever.
